Well said. I can’t tell you how many times over the past 20 or so years I’ve investigated mailbox sensors and never built or purchased one due to cost. A prior home had a ¼ mile long driveway (or 0.4 km if you prefer), so you can imagine why the idea had such a pull on me. I still haven’t bought one, but my current driveway is much shorter.

Nest was sold in 2013 to Google, SmartThings was acquired by Samsung in 2014, and there were literally hundreds of smart home startups at that point, so yes, there was definitely smart home gear in 2015 (and well before).
